The release of 125 Sudanese soldiers held by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary organisation that has been engaged in combat with Sudanese forces since April, was made possible, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross on Thursday.
Following a request from the parties to the conflict, the soldiers were released on Wednesday, the organisation noted.
Jean-Christophe Sandoz, head of the ICRC team in Sudan, said in a statement, “We stand ready to act as a neutral intermediary for the release of detainees from all sides to the conflict whenever requested.”
Nearly 2.8 million people have been displaced by the war between the Sudanese army and the RSF, of whom about 650,000 have fled to nearby nations.
