Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr has explained his reason for not inviting Union Berlin’s forward, Taiwo Awoniyi for the Super Eagles World Cup qualifier against Liberia and Cape Verde.
Despite his new found scoring form for his Bundesliga club this season, Awoniyi was left out of Rohr’s 30 man list to prosecute the matches.
The former Liverpool star, who signed a permanent deal with the German club after his loan spell last season, has scored three goals in three appearances for the Iron Ones this campaign.
But, beyond expectation, the 23-year-old failed to make the Super Eagles squad for the crucial World cup qualifiers, with Rohr stating his invitation was surplus to requirements due to the availability of three centre forwards.
“There are people calling for Awoniyi while also there are those calling for other players. We can only bring three centre forwards, we already have Osimhen, we have Paul Onuachu, we have Terem Moffi who is doing well in Lorient and we even have Kelechi Iheanacho. So which among these players will I remove for Awoniyi to come in?” he questioned.
The Super Eagles will take on Liberia at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos on Friday, before traveling to face Cape Verde three days later.
