The Super Eagles of Nigeria solidified their 2022 World Cup qualification with an emphatic 2-0 victory over Central African Republic (CAR) on Sunday at the Japoma Stadium, Douala, theheritagetimes.com reports.
Two first half goals from Leon Balogun and Victor Osimhen ensured that the Eagles took revenge of Thursday’s shock home defeat in the hands of Raoul Savoy’s men.
The three-time African champions dominated the encounter from start to finish, but failed to improve the score line despite creating goal scoring chances.
The win ensured Nigeria sat aloft Group C with nine points from four games.
Speaking after the match, Coach Gernot Rohr hailed his team’s reaction following their first-leg defeat in Lagos.
“It was a good reaction from the team. We were unlucky in the first game and after the lost everyone wanted to take a rematch.
The boys did very well…we could have scored a third or fourth goal. We also changed the system playing three defenders at the back and it helped us,” Rohr said.
The German tactitian also lauded the leadership role of influential skipper Ahmed Musa, who reached his 100th cap for the Eagles.
Rohr’s men will visit Liberia for their next qualifying clash on November 13, before playing host to Cape Verde three days later.
