Nigeria’s Super Eagles Coach, Jose Peseiro, is currently scouting for a safe pair of hands ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cote d’ivoire which kicks off January 13, 2024.
Emerging reports has revealed that the coach has held talks with a Nigerian goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabili, following goalkeeping crisis plaguing the country’s men national team.
Club Confirmation, Next Match
This was disclosed by the goalkeeper’s club Chippa United FC of South Africa via its X platform.
The club wrote, “Privileged to host Jose Peseiro, head coach of the Nigerian Super Eagles here in Gqeberha a moment of inspiration for us at Chippa United.”
After paying the surprise visit to the club at their training ground on Friday, where he held talks with their shot stopper, he will be in the stands on Saturday to watch him.
Chippa United will face Golden Arrows in Johannesburg.
Nwabili’s Pedigree
Nwabili, a former Lobi Stars keeper, has already been capped by the home-based Super Eagles.
He has been in great form for his current club after keeping six clean sheets in 12 games, conceding 10 goals.
Goal Keeping Headache
There have been great concerns in the goalkeeping department with the team’s first choice, Francis Uzoho struggling to inspire confidence following the team’s poor results in recent matches.
Fellow keeper Maduka Okoye was also under the spotlight after Nigeria’s quarter-final exit from the 2021 Nations Cup, a 1-0 defeat by Tunisia.
In Cote d’ivoire, Nigeria will battle the hosts, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau in the group stage.
