The 2023 African Games originally scheduled for August 4 to 19 in Ghana, has now been moved to 2024.
This was disclosed by the Local Organizing Committee, (LOC) who announced the postponement in a press conference held in Accra, according to MyJoyOnline.
Report revealed that the games had faced threats from African sporting confederations, due to disagreements with the African Union over the marketing rights of the games.
The disagreement was amicably resolved on Sunday, at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa, following a meeting facilitated by Ghana’s President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Also, a new protocol agreement was signed on the sidelines of the AU Heads of States Summit in Addis Ababa last week.
Ghana has been struggling to prepare the necessary hosting facilities for the event.
For instance, construction works at the Borteyman Sports Complex, earmarked to host the swimming, boxing and indoor sporting events, are notoriously behind schedule while organizers also face a race against time to complete the University of Ghana Stadium.
Works on the games village have also faced complications from the University of Ghana academic calendar, with the continuous presence of students at the Diaspora Halls, making it difficult for refurbishment works to progress at the required pace.
Heritage Times HT gathered that a new date for the Games will soon be announced, following the resolution of the crises between the African Union, (AU) the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa, (ANOCA) and the Association of African Sports Confederations, (AASC).
