Kenya have kicked Cameroon out of the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier, after triumphing 4-3 on penalties in the first round action on Tuesday.
The result came as a shock to the Cameroonian team earlier seen as favourites to gain passage in the qualification stage.
How The Lionesses Fell Apart
The Cameroonian side had secured a narrow 1-0 victory over the Kenyan team last week in the first leg of the qualifier and needed to secure a favourable result in the second leg to progress into the next round.
But it was never meant to be as Kenya took their pound of flesh by recording a 1-0 home win.
After both sides could not be separated, the game proceeded to a penalty shoot-out and Kenya prevailed.
The Cameroon ouster made it the second consecutive time they failed to qualify for the competition.
Nigeria Face Cape Verde
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have reached the second round without kicking a ball after their opponents Sao Tome and Principe withdrew from the qualifier.
The nine-time African champions will confront Cape Verde in the second round of the qualifier for a ticket in the WAFCON finals.
The Cape Verde women’s national team edged out their counterparts from Liberia 6-2 on aggregate to set up a mouthwatering clash with Nigeria.
Other Second Round Fixtures
It will be Senegal vs. Egypt, Mali vs. Guinea, Algeria vs. Burundi, Equatorial Guinea vs. DR Congo, Tanzania vs. Togo, Ghana vs. Namibia, Kenya vs. Bostwana, Tunisia vs. Congo, Angola vs. Zambia and Burkina Faso vs. South Africa.
The second round will be held between November 27 and December 5, 2023.
