Clubs in the Italian Serie A have been banned from using green kits for matches, starting from the 2022-23 league season for television clarity.
This comes in the heels of a growing concern among television broadcasters, that the green kits and the colour of the pitch are too similar, causing players to blend in with the background.
However, the change in rules will only apply to outfield players, meaning goalkeepers will still be able to wear the colour when manning the nets.
Clubs like Sassuolo, and Venezia, that are back in Italy’s top flight after 19 years, have green in their emblem. Sassuolo, known as the Neroverdi, have combined both green and black in their home kit while Venezia has a stripe orange, green and black jersey.
Rome-based Lazio used a lime green jersey as their away kit in the 2020-21 campaign, but that will not be allowed under the new regulations.
The change in rules has come under severe criticism and ridiculed by many of the league’s viewers, who believe that Serie A has a lot more on their plate to deal with than banning green shirts.
