According to authorities, 76 have people died in a boat accident in southeast Nigeria.
On Friday, a vessel carrying 85 passengers sank in Ogbaru, a region of Anambra, due to severe flooding.
The death toll has been confirmed by officials, according to Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman. This comes after nearly two days of rescue operations.
According to him, searches are still being conducted for any missing passengers.
According to the spokesman, President Muhammadu Buhari has directed emergency services and relevant agencies to conduct rigorous safety inspections to prevent further mishaps.
According to local media accounts, the boat’s engine stalled, and it capsized due to large waves.
The accident’s exact cause is yet to be confirmed by authorities.
The National Emergency Management Agency of Nigeria reports that since May, flooding and severe rains have affected more than 500,000 people in nearly 30 of the 36 states of the nation.
It has warned that overflowing dams will likely cause significant damage in several locations.
According to the organization, hundreds of hectares of agricultural land have already been damaged, and some 100,000 people have been forced to flee their homes.
