A 79-year-old British national, Edgar Charles Frederick, has died after being hit by a vehicle in Kenyan President William Ruto’s motorcade.
The accident occurred on Thursday along a major road in the capital, Nairobi.
A driver of a support vehicle in Ruto’s convoy was arrested in connection with the incident but has since been released on bail, police confirmed.
Frederick had been visiting Kenya to see his sister and nephew, who are residents of the country, police spokesman Michael Muchiri told the BBC.
Authorities have contacted the victim’s family, and a post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out.
Police said the driver, who failed to stop after the crash, will face court proceedings once investigations are completed.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage on Kenyan social media.
A spokesperson for the UK High Commission stated that officials were aware of the reports and were seeking further information.
Videos circulating online show a man in blue jeans and a light-coloured shirt lying bleeding on the road outside a busy shopping centre. Other images depict the victim covered in a checked Maasai Shuka.
President Ruto was on his way to a public engagement in Nairobi at the time of the incident.
