Officials caught in a viral video receiving money from Chinese nationals will be punished, the Nigeria Police Force said on Thursday, reiterating its commitment to maintaining professionalism among officers.
A viral video showed Nigerian police officers lined up in full regalia at an unknown location, while some individuals believed to be Chinese nationals handed them cash.
The incident has attracted widespread condemnation, amidst the declining reputation of the Force, whose officials are frequently accused of bribery.
Several Nigerians have expressed dissatisfaction with the conduct of the police officers, calling for reforms within the Force to instil professionalism.
The security officials, numbering about 12, were seen receiving money one after the other, in what appeared to be a coordinated act by the Chinese nationals and their accomplices.
“The Nigeria Police Force has taken cognisance of a disturbing video circulating in the media, showing police officers receiving money from Chinese nationals,” said the spokesperson for the Police Force, Muyiwa Adejobi, while condemning the act.
“The Force has strongly condemned the conduct exhibited by the police officers in the video, describing it as unprofessional and unethical.
“The actions of the officers do not represent the established ethics, standards, and core values of the Nigeria Police Force.
“The officers captured in the video have been identified and subjected to disciplinary proceedings,” he stated.
The Force warned individuals and organisations using police services, particularly escorts and guards.
“The Nigeria Police Force hereby cautions individuals and organisations privileged to the services of police personnel, particularly as escorts and guards or other specialised services, to desist from any act capable of degrading the integrity of its officers and bringing the Force into disrepute,” Adejobi warned.
