The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) could face stiffer sanctions from FIFA after crowd trouble marred the end of Nigeria vs Ghana 2022 World Cup play-off at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on Tuesday.
The home fans reacted angrily after the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the mundial on the away goals rule following a 1-1 draw in Abuja on Tuesday night.
The Ghanaian players and staff were pelted with water bottles from the stands as they fled the pitch to take cover away from the pitch invaders, who had stadium facilities destroyed.
FIFA told BBC Sport Africa that it is analysing official match reports, and will then decide if action will be taken against the NFF.
“The relevant information included in the match reports will be evaluated by the competent disciplinary bodies before deciding on the next steps to be taken,” a FIFA statement added.
Reports emerged on Thursday that FIFA had indefinitely banned Nigeria from hosting international matches at the newly renovated Moshood Abiola National Stadium turf but keen observers believe that with investigation set to be concluded, Nigeria should be in for hefty sanctions.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Government have set up a panel to investigate the cause of the pandemonium at the Stadium.
