Nigeria’s Super Eagles on-field captain and 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) best player William Troost-Ekong club side PAOK Thessaloniki have been crowned the champions of the Greece Super League.
The club emerged victorious after defeating Aris 2-1 in a champioship playoff.
Ekong who has been on the sideline since the AFCON 2023 final in Ivory Coast since February did not play a game for PAOK in the palyoff and since the start of the season.
The Greek side has now won the league four times but it was Ekong’s first major honour at club level.
He made just 10 appearances for the White and Black in the just-concluded season.
After returning to light training recently, Ekong could make a return to the Super Eagles squad ahead of next month’s World Cup qualifiers after seen recently return to training on his social media account.
Sunday’s triumph is the 4th Greece topflight win for PAOK with ther most recent coming during the 2018/19 season.
Heritage Times HT reports that PAOK will later enter the qualifying rounds of the Champions League next season.
With 80 points, PAOK finished two points ahead of defending champion AEK Athens, which defeated visiting Lamia 3-0.
Third-place Olympiakos finished above fourth-place Panathinaikos after the bitter rivals drew 2-2.
Aris finished fifth and Lamia sixth.
