The Taliban government in Afghanistan has ordered that all women beauty salons in the country be closed down immediately.
Media reports quote a decree published by Taliban as saying, “No justification was provided for the decision. The licences the salons require to operate will expire next month.’’
Many Afghan women work in beauty salons from where they provide for their families.
Despite pledging to respect rights of women in 2021 when it took power, Taliban has taken decision seen as not promoting women’s rights
Women in the country since 2021 have been pushed out of most professional employment opportunities.
Universities and secondary schools have also closed their doors to women and girls.
Taliban decrees are not always fully implemented and many Kabul women continue to appear in public with their faces uncovered.
Also, a number of private schools continue to offer education to girls beyond primary level.
