The President of Afreximbank, Prof. Benedict Okey Oramah, has stressed the importance of empowering Africa’s youth, calling them the continent’s greatest asset for socio-economic transformation and global prominence.
Speaking recently in Abuja at an event themed “Connecting Africa through Youth Entrepreneurship and Digital Innovation,” Oramah highlighted the dual nature of Africa’s youthful demographic as both a challenge and an immense opportunity.
With over 60% of Africa’s population under the age of 25, Oramah noted that the continent is home to the youngest and fastest-growing population in the world. He described African youth as a catalyst for innovation, creativity, and resilience, emphasising their potential to shape the continent’s future.
“The youth of Africa are the heartbeat of our economic and social progress,” Oramah stated. “However, they continue to face critical challenges, including limited access to education, job opportunities, and entrepreneurial resources.”
The event, attended by youth representatives from 91 countries, government officials, and development partners such as the Development Bank of Africa and Afreximbank, underscored the significance of investing in digital infrastructure and mentorship programs for young entrepreneurs.
Oramah referenced a survey indicating that 78% of young Africans aged 18 to 24 plan to start businesses within the next five years. He emphasised the importance of robust support systems to ensure their success, particularly in digital innovation.
Kenyan High Commissioner to Nigeria, Isaac Parashina, also addressed the summit, highlighting Africa’s vast potential driven by its youthful population and abundant natural resources. He called for strategic investments and policy frameworks to harness Africa’s demographic dividend and foster sustainable development.
The summit served as a rallying point for stakeholders to prioritise youth-focused initiatives, laying the groundwork for a prosperous and innovative Africa led by its vibrant youth population.
