A report by Checkpoint Software Technologies reveals a significant rise in cyberattacks worldwide during the second quarter of 2024.
The report highlights a concerning trend, with a 30% increase in attacks compared to the same period last year.
Africa emerged as the most targeted region, experiencing a staggering 37% year-on-year increase, averaging a hefty 2,960 attacks per organization each week.
South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria bore the brunt of these attacks, with South Africa seeing a 4% rise to an average of 1,450 attacks weekly.
Notably, these countries are also ground zero for prevalent malware like Qbot and FakeUpdates (SocGholish), posing a significant threat to African organizations.
However, the report offers a glimmer of hope for Africa. Ransomware attacks in the continent saw a significant decline, with only 1% of global ransomware incidents targeting Africa in Q2 2024. This marks a substantial 55% drop compared to 2023.
Latin America wasn’t as fortunate, witnessing the most significant attack increase globally. The region grappled with a staggering 53% year-on-year surge, averaging 2,667 attacks per organization weekly.
The Asia-Pacific (APAC) region also saw a rise, with attacks increasing by 23%. This alarming trend underscores the widespread nature of the global cyber threat.
Experts attribute this rise to factors like the rapid adoption of digital technologies and the evolving tactics of cybercriminals, who increasingly leverage advanced techniques like artificial intelligence and machine learning.
National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) echoes this concern, highlighting how digitalization has amplified cybersecurity risks.
The Cyber Security Experts Association of Nigeria (CSEAN) specifically warns of an impending rise in cyber threats involving Artificial Intelligence (AI) throughout 2024.
They point to the prevalence of impersonation scams, where attackers create fake websites and social media profiles mimicking well-known figures to deceive unsuspecting victims.
The report also identifies the most targeted industries. Education institutions topped the list with an average of 3,341 attacks weekly, followed by government and military (2,084 attacks), and healthcare (1,999 attacks).
Checkpoint Software emphasizes the importance of robust cybersecurity measures. They advocate for enhanced security postures to reduce the likelihood of future attacks.
The report concludes by urging organizations to prioritize cybersecurity and develop customized strategies to combat the evolving threat landscape.
Implementing advanced security protocols, fostering a culture of awareness, and preparing for potential incidents are critical steps businesses can take to navigate the relentless tide of cyber threats.
