Leaders from across Africa have started to arrive in Beijing, China, for the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit, which begins on Wednesday.
This is the ninth FOCAC summit, and it aims to chart a course for the evolving strategic relationship between China and Africa in the post-pandemic world.
The summit is happening during a period of increasing global political tension, as China looks to strengthen its position on the world stage.
Climate change and energy are expected to be major talking points between Chinese and African representatives.
Talks will also concentrate on cooperation in the digital and technology sectors, with the aim of bridging the digital gap in Africa.
Previous FOCAC summits have resulted in substantial financial pledges for projects in areas like infrastructure, agriculture, and manufacturing.
However, experts caution that African nations should use the summit to promote collaboration that is both sustainable and mutually beneficial.
China has been actively working to build stronger connections with the Global South.
Analysts believe that China sees these relationships not just as economic opportunities, but also as vital to its wider geopolitical ambitions.
The investments don’t always meet the needs and development goals of the recipient countries, and they can lead to high levels of debt.
Analysts suggest that African countries should reconsider the future direction of the partnership.
They believe that, if handled properly, FOCAC could usher in a new age of collaboration that is both sustainable and beneficial for everyone involved.
The summit will take place from September 4th to 6th.
