One year after it was closed following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, authorities in Algeria have indicated readiness to reopen its embassy in Kyiv, a state television said on Sunday citing a foreign ministry statement.
“This decision falls within the framework of preserving the interests of the Algerian state and the interests of the national community in this country,” the foreign ministry was quoted in a statement.
It added, “The Algerian embassy in Kiev, which suspended its activities due to the deteriorating security situation in Ukraine, will be managed by the Chargé d’Affaires.”
The embassy closed in March last year after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The decision to reopen the embassy will be effective “as soon as possible,” the statement read.
This comes days after Ukraine marked the first anniversary of invasion of its territory by Moscow, a war Russia has repeatedly called “special military operations”.
Thousands of persons have been killed since Feb. 24, 2022 start of the war while millions have been displaced as property worth billions of dollars have been destroyed.
Kyiv has urged its Western allies to increase military assistance as the invasion which has entered its second year continues.
