An Israeli gang leader on Interpol wanted list, Yitzhak Abergil was has been arrested in a Johannesburg suburb and has appeared in court as his extradition hearing commences.
The 46-year-old is wanted for conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder. He was arrested along with seven other people during an operation conducted by Interpol and various units of South African Police Service.
Abergil is suspected to be a member of a criminal group called the Abergil Organisation.
In 2015, he appeared on Interpol’s Red Notice list. A Red Notice is a request to law enforcement worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender or similar legal action.
The accused will be back in court next week to face charges of drug, unlicensed firearm and ammunition possession as well as charges of possession of prohibited firearms, police said in a statement.
