Banyana Banyana of South Africa defeated champions Super Falcons of Nigeria 2-1 in the first game in Group C, at the 2023 WAFCON in Morocco on Monday.
The Super Falcons lost their opening group game of the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations (WAFCON) as a result of two costly mistakes they made in the second half.
The Super Falcons had entered their match against South Africa as the favourites owing to their reputation in the tournament.
At the Stade Moulay Hassan in Rabat, Morocco, the Super Falcons, captained by Onome Ebi, did not get off to a good start against the Banyana Banyana.
It is now back-to-back wins for South Africa against the Falcons after they triumphed 4-2 in the Aishat Buhari Cup in 2021.
For the Super Falcons to advance to the knockout rounds of the competition, they must now perform well against Burundi and Botswana in their other group matches.
