Benin’s armed forces are reeling from a severe attack near its northern border, where militant activity linked to neighboring Niger and Burkina Faso has surged in recent years. The assault targeted a heavily fortified military position on Wednesday evening, marking one of the deadliest incidents in the region, according to Colonel Faizou Gomina, the national guard’s chief of staff.
Describing the attack as a “significant setback,” Col Gomina emphasized the strategic importance of the location, which had been one of the nation’s best-defended outposts.
Mounting Jihadist Pressure
Though no group has claimed responsibility, the assault fits a troubling pattern of violence attributed to jihadist fighters crossing into Benin from unstable neighboring states. Over the past three years, militant incursions have intensified, resulting in mounting casualties among security forces. A diplomatic source revealed that more than 120 soldiers had been killed in such attacks between 2021 and late 2024.
This latest strike follows a deadly December ambush in which three soldiers were killed and four wounded while guarding critical infrastructure in the northeast.
Uncertain Death Toll
Official figures on Wednesday’s casualties have not yet been released. However, opposition group The Democrats alleged that around 30 soldiers were killed in the Alibori region, Reuters reported. AFP cited security sources estimating the death toll at 28.
In response, military forces launched operations to secure the area, reportedly killing 40 attackers so far, according to a security official.
Calls for Strategic Overhaul
Col Gomina called for an urgent reevaluation of military tactics to address the growing security crisis. He stressed the need for decisive action from commanders, urging them to adopt more effective strategies to confront the escalating threat. “Wake up, officers and section chiefs. We have battles to win,” he said in a stern address.
Since 2022, Benin has stationed nearly 3,000 troops in the north to counter cross-border threats and strengthen its defenses. Yet, Wednesday’s attack highlights the formidable challenges facing the country as it struggles to stem the tide of insurgency at its borders.
