Residents in a border area between Tunisia and Algeria have discovered the bodies of two migrants believed to be from Saharan regions. The bodies were found in the desert, near the oasis of Hazoua.
The discovery comes after dozens of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa were expelled from the Tunisian city of Sfax following clashes with residents that resulted in the death of a Tunisian national. The migrants were relocated to border areas with Algeria and Libya.
A resident of the border area, stated in condition of anonymity that the two bodies belonged to young men. He said that the migrants were left in the desert without food or water, He further stated that in recent days, About a hundred migrants were dropped off in the desert after being conveyed in two buses.
Salma Belaali, the director of the Tunisia office at Human Rights Watch, said that the organization estimates that there are between 150 and 200 migrants who were expelled towards the Algerian border who are in danger if they are not rescued immediately.
“We are very concerned about the situation of these migrants,” Belaali said. “They are in a very precarious situation and they need urgent assistance.”
