The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that no fewer than five persons were killed while 44 others sustained injuries in a Gas explosion that occurred at Baruwa area of Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.
Acting Zonal Coordinator, South-West Zonal Office, NEMA Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, told newsmen in Lagos that the incident occurred at 5.40 a.m. at Candos Road, Baruwa Inside, Lagos when a Liquefied Petroleum Gas tanker was in the process of discharging at the Best Roof Gas Plant Station.
The explosion reportedly threw the discharging tanker across the road, igniting an inferno that destroyed not just the gas station but many buildings including two bungalows, four-storey buildings, one hotel, a school, one residential building, one creative centre and 24 Shops.
Farinloye also confirmed that the fire has been put off by officers of the Lagos State Fire Service while impact assessment by emergency response agencies was ongoing.
The explosion comes a few weeks after 30 people were killed in a similar incident that occurred at Iju-Ishaga, Lagos in September.
