The Copa America has been moved to Brazil hours after the South American football governing body CONMEBOL dropped Argentina as hosts due to the rapid increase of COVID-19 cases in the country.
With two weeks to kickoff, South America’s CONMEBOL football federation tweeted that “The CONMEBOL Copa America 2021 will be played in Brazil!” and the June 13-July 10 dates were maintained.
The tournament which was set to start in Argentina and the champion be crowned at the final in Colombia, would have been the first Copa América hosted by two countries.
Colombia lost its co-hosting right amid growing unrest and protests over the country’s handling of the pandemic.
CONMEBOL is expected to announce the venues and dates of matches in the coming hours.
Brazil – who have won the tournament nine times – hosted the last Copa America, in 2019.
