Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Major General Farouk Yahaya as the new Nigerian Chief of Army Staff.
This was announced in a statement by the Acting Director Defence Information, Brigadier General Onyeama Nwachukwu.
Yahaya’s appointment ushers him in as the 22nd Chief of Army Staff.
Major General Yahaya before his appointment, was the General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army and the present Theatre Commander of the Counter Terrorism Counter Insurgency Military outfit for the North East, code-named Operation HADIN KAI.
Yahaya’s appointment comes after the death of the former Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Ibrahim Attahiru, who died in a plane crash alongside all passengers and crew aboard.
Attahiru’s death is the fourth air tragedy in the past five months involving Nigerian Air Force aircrafts.
