Olympique de Marseille has announced the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas following his offer to resign due to the club signing Olivier Ntcham from Celtic on transfer dead-line day.
The 43-year-old Portuguese tactician had expressed displeasure over the club’s move to sign a player against his wishes, and thus, handed his resignation earlier today, during a press conference.
The latest development means the club would probably announce an interim manager to take charge of the team when they file out against RC Lens in a Ligue 1 game on Wednesday.
Villas-Boas was appointed coach of the French club in 2019 after he signed a two-year contract to succeed Rudi Garcia.
During his managerial stint at the French club, he led the team to the final of the Trophée des Champions final in 2020, where they lost to Paris St Germain 2 – 1. He also guided the team to a second place finish in the League last season.
Villas-Boas claimed he told the club who he wanted to be signed as a replacement for Morgan Samson who left to join Aston Villa, but the board took a different route to bring in Ntcham, 24, from Celtic. A move he vehemently disapproved and opted to resign instead.
He also declared he had no say in the loan departure of Nemanja Radonjic to Hertha Berlin.
