The publisher of the newspaper L’Anecdote, Jean-Pierre Amougou Belinga has been arrested in connection with the murder of a Cameroonian influential journalist, Salomon Mbani Zogo better known as Martinez Zogo.
Belinga was arrested on Monday according to the Cameroonian Communications ministry two weeks after the body of the 51-year-old host of popular daily radio show, Embouteillage or Gridlock in English was discovered.
Martinez Zogo’s mutilated body was found Sunday, January 22 near Soa, a suburb of Yaoundé, a development that left many shocked even as civil society organisations continue to allege a clampdown on the media.
He used his programme to fight corruption and illegal wealth acquisition, calling out public office holders and their cronies by their names.
Amougou Belinga, a businessman known for his closeness to several ministers was among those Martinez Zogo called out.
Belinga’s media group l’Anecdote confirmed its owner was undergoing questioning by the gendarmerie’s top institution.
Cameroonian President Paul Biya had last week Thursday Thursday, ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the journalist.
