The Central Bank of Nigeria CBN says it neither banned cryptocurrency in the country nor discouraged people from trading in it.
Speaking in Abuja at the 30th seminar for Finance Correspondents and Business Editors organised by the apex bank, The Governor of the bank, Godwin Emefiele, said what the bank did was to protect the banking sector from the activities of Cryptocurrencies and not a ban on its activities.
The Governor who was represented by Adamu Lamtek, Deputy Governor, Corporates Services, further explained that What the apex bank did was to prohibit transactions on Cryptocurrencies in the banking sector.
It is worthwhile to note that there have been indications suggesting that the CBN will regulate cryptocurrency in the country instead of banning it.
More so, prominent figures like the Vice President of Nigeria has called for the regulation of cryptocurrencies in the country, as against the prohibition of digital currencies.
