Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that sensitive electoral materials will no longer be routed through the Central bank of Nigeria (CBN).
This was disclosed on Saturday by Chairman of the electoral body, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu while responding to questions at a dialogue on elections in Abuja.
Prof. Yakubu specifically noted that beginning from the Ekiti State Governorship election, INEC will not keep its sensitive materials with the CBN.
He said the decision is to guarantee that electoral materials for the lined-up elections are not compromised, following calls by concerned individuals and groups over the sanctity of elections materials kept with the CBN.
These concerns were further fuelled after stories emerged that the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, may be interested in the 2023 presidency.
But Emefiele has since denied the reports.
