Crew members aboard a Ghanaian-registered fishing vessel that was hit by a suspected pirate attack are currently safe, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced on Monday.
Following the attack on 27 March, three Chinese nationals went missing from Ghanaian waters and were believed to have been kidnapped after seven armed men boarded their ship and fired warning shots, according to a report released over the weekend by the West African nation’s military.
A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, confirmed the safety of all crew members at a press conference on Monday.
He said the Chinese Embassy in Ghana had immediately initiated emergency protocols and engaged closely with local authorities to ensure the crew’s safety.
“All crew members are currently safe,” Jiakun stated.
“Upon learning of the incident, the Chinese Embassy in Ghana immediately activated its emergency response mechanism and has been maintaining close communication with the Ghanaian side,” he added.
