Comoros officials have confirmed that President Azali Assoumani sustained injuries following a knife attack.
According to a government spokesperson, the incident occurred near Moroni, the nation’s capital, and the president only suffered minor wounds.
The assailant was swiftly apprehended by the authorities.
Azali first took control of the country in 1999 after leading a military coup.
He returned to the presidency in 2016 after a contested election and was re-elected in January of the previous year.
The election was overshadowed by claims of electoral fraud and led to violent protests that lasted two days.
Critics have accused President Azali of increasingly autocratic tendencies.
He also served as the chair of the African Union from 2023 to 2024.
