The governments of the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo are preparing a joint bid for the 2029 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In a statement, Didier Budimbu, Minister of Sports for the DRC, confirmed his government’s intention, in partnership with that of Congo-Brazzaville, to submit a joint bid to host this prestigious continental competition.
“With my counterpart from Congo-Brazzaville, we are determined to be able to organize the 2029 AFCON together,” he said.
He particularly highlighted a geographical feature that could appeal to CAF: Kinshasa and Brazzaville, located on either side of the Congo River, are the two closest capitals in the world.
