Local NGOs in the Tunisian city of Kairouan are calling for urgent international help to combat the spike in coronavirus infections.
The Tunisian authorities imposed a lockdown on the city with about 500,000 inhabitants last week.
However, the infection rate remains high and hospitals are overwhelmed with Covid-19 patients amid lockdown.
The city located in the north-central part of the North African country want medical assistance as well as more vaccines.
According to local media sources, eight people die per day on average in Kairouan after contracting coronavirus.
Experts blame the government for limiting a lockdown to the city of Kairouan only instead of imposing a national lockdown.
With just 4% of the population fully vaccinated, there is also the belief that the Delta variant is spreading fast.
Health officials across the world have been alarmed by the rapid spread of the Delta variant.
The World Health Organization said on Friday that the Delta variant had reached at least 85 countries.
