The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has announced that 300 new infections were confirmed on Sunday, a figure which is the highest recorded by the centre since August.
The new cases were reported from just six states with Lagos having a massive lead of 255 confirmed cases.
The commercial city is the hotspot for confirmed cases in Nigeria with nearly 22,000 infections, representing about a third of the country’s total.
Other affected states include FCT (27), Oyo (10), Kaduna (5), Ondo (2), Kano (1)
It would be recalled that Nigeria’s coronavirus daily infection rate had been below 300 for almost three months until Sunday’s figure.
The latest update fuels health workers concern of an imminent second wave amid widespread disregard for covid-19 protocols by Nigerian and laxity of the government to enforce safety measures.
Such disregard was widely observed during #EndSARS protest in which thousands of protesters took to the streets across states of the country defying repeated calls by the country’s infectious disease outfit, NCDC, and health experts to avoid mass gathering.
A number of COVID-19 protocols that were breached include the Several COVID-19 protocols including disregard for social distancing and non-use of face masks.
