The Civil Aviation Authority of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has imposed a three-month ban on Rwandan aircraft due to the ongoing conflict with the M23 rebel movement.
A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued on Wednesday states that all civil and government aircraft registered or based in Rwanda are prohibited from flying over or landing in the DRC. This restriction will remain in effect until 11 May, citing security concerns in the region.
The decision follows the collapse of mediation efforts led by Angola, after which the M23 rebels resumed their offensive in eastern DRC. Congolese authorities accuse Rwanda of supporting the rebel group and demand the withdrawal of its troops from DRC territory, allegations that Rwanda denies.
Heritage Times HT recalls that in late January, the M23 rebels seized Goma, the capital of North Kivu province. However, on 4 February, they declared a unilateral humanitarian ceasefire, which remains in effect.
