A court in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has sentenced an army colonel Mike Mikombe to death for his role in the killing of over than 50 demonstrators in August.
Col. Mikombe was charged and convicted for crimes against humanity.
Three fellow officers have also been convicted by a military tribunal and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Troops serving under him had opened fire on members of a religious sect taking part in a banned protest against the UN peacekeeping forces in the eastern city of Goma
Col Mikombe’s lawyers have said they’ll appeal.
No execution has taken place in the country in the last 20 years despite death sentences pronounced by the courts.
