Federal regulators are looking into possible animal welfare violations at Elon Musk’s business Neuralink, according to Reports.
Musk participated in the founding of Neuralink, a business that makes brain implants that, in the future, may allow paralyzed people to regain their ability to move.
According to Reports, the inspector general of the US Department of Agriculture launched the federal investigation after receiving information about possible Animal Welfare Act violations.
The act, which was created in 1966, governs how animals are handled in research settings.
According to Reuters, records and interviews with more than 20 current and former workers indicate that there is internal opposition to the way animals are tested, and that Musk’s efforts to hasten research have led to flawed studies.
Reuters said that because the unsuccessful experiments were repeated, more animals were used in the tests and killed.
According to data and conversations with persons familiar with the activities, Reuters calculates that 1,500 animals have been slaughtered since 2018, including 280 pigs, monkeys, and lambs.
The animals are reportedly murdered once studies are finished so that researchers can study post-mortem conditions.
