England on Wednesday surpassed all hurdles to reach a first ever Women’s World Cup final after they overcame Australia 3-1 in Sydney.
It was a semi-final that lived up to expectations with Australia being cohost enjoying huge fans’ applause.
Their supporters were eventually disappointed when the Australian side lost out to hand the Lionesses a crucial victory, thereby gifting the England football team a first global final show since 1966.
How The Long Awaited Triumph Panned Out
Ella Toone gave England the lead in the first half with a superb first-time strike which sailed into the top corner.
The Lionesses pushed on and controlled proceedings until the second half, when Australia threw everything at them and star striker Sam Kerr – starting her first match of the tournament – struck a 25-yard stunner over goalkeeper Mary Earps’ head to make it 1-1.
Historic Final Date
Both England and Spain will be playing their first Women’s World Cup final when they meet at Stadium Australia on Sunday.
On Saturday, Australia will play Sweden for a third place match in Brisbane.
Cohost of the ongoing tournament, New Zealand, had crashed out in the group stage.
