Senegalese and Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly was sent off during week three English Premier League clash that eventually gifted Leeds United a surprising 3-0 home victory on Sunday August 21, 2022.

In the same encounter, Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy gifted Leeds the opener by miscontrolling a backpass which kicked off a day to forget for the Blues.

Chelsea, after spending more than £170m on players over the summer, were the architects of their own downfall throughout the duration of play, despite topping possession.

For Leeds, they continued their unbeaten start to the season as they secured a famous win over Chelsea’s new-look team with a display which caused Thomas Tuchel nightmares.

Having secured their Premier League survival on the final day of last season and lost both Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha to Manchester City and Barcelona over the summer, Leeds’ story was expected to be one of how they would cope.

But with boss Marsch making several key signings, there was a spirit and team ethic in Leeds which Chelsea could not match. They were helped too by a crowd which was already deafening before kick-off and only increased in volume as the visitors fell apart.

Later on Sunday, Manchester City staged a thrilling fightback as the Premier League champions rescued a 3-3 draw against Newcastle.

Pep Guardiola’s side were in danger of a first league defeat since February after falling 3-1 behind in the second half at St James’ Park.

But Erling Haaland sparked City’s revival with his third goal for the club before Bernardo Silva’s equaliser completed the escape act.

Second-placed City remain unbeaten with seven points from their first three games, leaving them two points behind leaders Arsenal.

While Guardiola will be concerned with the way City were carved open by Newcastle, the spirited comeback underlined why they have won the title four times in the last five seasons.

In another encounter, Brighton defeated West Ham United two nil away.
