The Prime Minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed has announced the appointment of Dr. Mulu Nega as the chief executive of Tigray State.
“The chief executive will recruit and appoint heads to lead executive organs of the regional state from political parties legally operating in the region,” Mr Abiy said in a statement.
The appointment indicates Mr Abiy’s commitment to oust Tigray’s governing Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) from power.
Mr. Debretsion Gebremichael, who had been acting governor since January 2018, was stripped of immunity from prosecution on Thursday.
The development came after Mr. Debretsion was appointed president of the state on 24 September 2020 after the regional state held its own election in defiance of the federal government’s decision to delay national polls due to Covid-19.
