Ethiopia’s Lower House of Parliament has approved the designation of two groups- the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and the Oromo Liberation Army (OLF-Shene) as terrorist organisations.
This comes after the majority vote on a resolution by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s cabinet in May.
The TPLF has been dominant in Ethiopian politics for three decades until 2018, and has been fighting with the federal government since November in Tigray state.
The OLF-Shene faces accusations of being behind attacks that target ethnic Amhara and other minorities living in the largest Oromia state.
The move comes a month before Ethiopia’s national elections.
