The Portuguese renewed his contract in September 2023, and it was scheduled to expire in February 2024 with the target of getting the Super Eagles to at least the semi-final of the 2023 AFCON.
He was initially rumoured to be on the radar of Algeria, but it turned out that he was never considered for the Desert Foxes job as the North Africa Nations announced their engagement of former Switzerland coach Vladimir Petkovic for 2026 World Cup qualifying on Thursday.
Eguavoen, who has served the country as coach at various international levels, last coached the Super Eagles at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, where the team lost to Tunisia in the Round of 16.
