Liverpool legend John Barnes has warned the Reds’ defenders not to throw caution into the wind when they set out to put Timo Werner’s pace under check in Thursday’s Premier League meeting with Chelsea.
Barnes, who admitted he doesn’t think the Germany international would have done better in a Reds shirt owing to his inconsistent form in front of goal, sounded a note of warning to Liverpool’s defenders about the problems he may pose with his pace.
Werner was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool after catching the Red’s attention with his scintillating form in the colours of RB Leipzig, scoring 34 goals in 45 appearances in all competitions.
“If Werner came to Liverpool he wouldn’t be playing any better, even if he does score at Anfield on Thursday,” Barnes told BonusCodesBet.co.uk.
“He’s a dangerous player and can score when he has confidence, but he wouldn’t play ahead of the front three of Mane, Salah and [Roberto] Firmino, so Liverpool haven’t made a mistake in not signing him.
“Right now, Werner is not playing with much confidence and not scoring many goals and he isn’t being helped right now as Chelsea don’t seem to score too many goals because Tuchel has them solid at the back.
“[Olivier] Giroud is playing well and will cause this Liverpool defence a problem because of his physicality, but Liverpool would rather he starts on Thursday because then the defence doesn’t have to tackle the pace of Werner.”
