Tammy Abraham’s hat-trick in Chelsea’s 3 – 1 victory over Luton Town on Sunday, made the striker the first Englishman since Frank Lampard to score three goals in an FA Cup tie for the Blues.
Abraham, who now has 11 goals in all competitions this season, also became the first Chelsea star to score a hat-trick in an FA Cup game since Brazilian playmaker Oscar against MK Dons in 2016.
The striker has hit double figure in terms of goals scored, after he netted 18 last season; to make him the first Chelsea youth team product to score 10 or more goals in back-to-back seasons since Michael Fillery in 1982-83.
Frank Lampard’s Chelsea have struggled in recent weeks to pull themselves back into contention for a silverware this season, having lost two finals in the last.
With the Premier League becoming ever more elusive for the Englishman, there seems to be a little piece of hope hanging on the FA Cup and Champions League title owing to their blistering form in Cup competitions.
The 23-year-old scored twice in the first half and once in the second as the Blues saw off a spirited Championship side.
“It’s great to score a hat-trick and win the game so comfortably,” Abraham told BBC Sport. “It is always nice to get a win and play well. Hopefully we will take that confidence on.”
It was not a good time for Timo Werner, who started the day on top of the club’s scoring charts, but passed the opportunity to make it 10 after he had his penalty saved by Luton keeper Simon Sluga.
It was his first penalty miss since October 2018, having converted each of his last eight spot-kicks.
The German got his last goal for the west London team in an FA Cup third round tie against Morecambe two weeks ago.
