Femi Fani-Kayode, a spokesperson for Nigeria’s All Progressives Congress, (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, has confirmed that he has been invited by the State Security Service (SSS) over a controversial comment he made regarding an alleged coup plot.
The invitation follows a tweet in which Mr. Fani-Kayode accused the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) Atiku Abubakar, of secretly meeting with serving military generals, as part of a plan to destabilize the country and pave the way for a coup d’etat.
The Nigerian military has denied the alleged secret meeting and described the comment as “wicked and very malicious propaganda.”
Mr. Fani-Kayode has been given 48 hours by the SSS to appear before them, and despite some members of the opposition party calling for his arrest, he has stated that the invitation shows that the SSS was simply doing its job and not influenced by anyone.
The former Aviation Minister also stated that he had initially dismissed an invitation sent via text message but that an official letter had been addressed to him by the secret police.
