As part of efforts to improve landing conditions, Federal Government has approved the installation of Category Three Instrument Landing System, CATIII ILS, at the Kano, Port Harcourt and Katsina Airports.
This was disclosed by Managing Director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, Capt. Fola Akinkuotu.
According to Capt. Fola, the CATIII ILS allows aircraft to land under zero weather visibility, especially at night.
The technology also helps in tackling the problem encountered by pilots and airlines during the hazy harmattan season.
Prior to this approval for installation, only the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, had the CATIII ILS facility.
It would be recalled that harmattan haze last December led to practical shutdown of local flight operations for some days when horizontal visibility dropped below the stipulated minima 800metres.
