Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, the Minister of Police Affairs, has assured Nigerians that the Federal Government is committed to implementing the demands of #ENDSARS protesters to provide a conducive environment for economic development and prosperity of Nigerians.
The minister, in a statement issued on Wednesday by his Press Secretary, Osaigbovo Ehisienmen said the call to scrap the Special Anti-Robbery Squad had been acceded to by the government, adding that implementations of other demands were at various stages.
Dingyadi who noted that governments at all levels are working closely to monitor the outcome of judicial panels set up by various state government to treat cases of violation of human rights by ex SARS operatives, added that punishments will be reeled out to those found guilty while victims would be compensated with resources put together, through the victims support fund.
He also said the announcement of the creation of Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT), to confront cases of armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent crimes by the Nigeria Police merely signified the commencement of rigorous activities such as selection and training of personnel before deploying them to the new unit.
“Training for SWAT personnel is ongoing at Nigeria Police Mobile Force training collages in Osun and Nasarawa States, while personnel of defunct SARS are now undergoing debriefing, medical and psychological re-evaluation to ascertain their fitness for reassignment in units, different from SWAT,” the statement read in part.
The minister further assured assures of full implementation of police reforms to deepen training of personnel, equipping and prioritize the welfare needs of policemen.
He however expressed displeasure over the hijacking of the protest by hoodlums and criminals to unleash terror, attack police facilities, carry out jailbreaks and cause wanton destruction of properties as seen in many parts of the country.
