Nigeria’s Flying Eagles on Saturday night qualified for the knockout stage of the ongoing 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup despite succumbing to Brazil defeat in the last group game of the competition.
The Nigerian side were topping the group table before the last group game, needing just only a draw to remain in the position.
Lost Chances
However, they lost it when they surrendered their chances to the superior power of the South American champions.
The Brazilians scored twice in three minutes through Jaoa Pedroso and Marquinhos to seal the game in the 42nd and 45th minutes.
The Flying Eagles fought hard in the second half and hit bar midway into the half, but they were unable to break down the well-organised Brazilian defence.
Italy’s Comeback Berth
In a corresponding match, Italy beat hapless Dominican Republic 3-0, thus making the trio of Nigeria, Italy and Brazil to finish with six points apiece.
But losing to Brazil and with Italy winning with a massive 3-0 against Dominican Republic meant that the Flying Eagles, the initial group leaders going into the last matches, were now third based on goal difference.
Brazil lead the group following their 6-0 win over Dominican Republic which gave the South Americans a massive seven goal difference.
Italy follow with a two goal difference.
