Ford Motor Company is recalling more than 634,000 SUVs globally because a damaged fuel injector could leak fumes onto a heated engine and start fires.
SUVs from the model years 2020 through 2023 called Bronco Sport and Escape are included in the recall. They all have three-cylinder, 1.5-liter engines. The Dearborn, Michigan-based manufacturer said on Thursday that while fires are uncommon and typically don’t happen when the engines are off, it is not advising owners to cease driving the vehicles or parking them outside.
Ford, however, said that it had received 20 reports of fires, three of which had started in surrounding structures. Additionally, the business claimed to have four claims of fires that were discovered less than five minutes after the engines were shut off. 43 legal lawsuits and four harm claims that do not involve burns have been made against Ford because of the issue.
Owners should schedule service with a preferred dealer when repairs become available, according to a statement from Jim Azzouz, executive director of customer experience.
Owners will be informed in writing starting on December 19.
Owners can acquire a free loaner SUV by bringing their SUV to the dealer, or they can get free pickup and delivery.
The injectors will be examined by dealers, who may decide to replace them. Injectors with cracks will now be covered under warranties for up to 15 years, according to Ford.
Dealers will update the engine control software on the cars so that it can recognize a cracked injector. A notice on the dashboard will instruct drivers to get service. Additionally, Ford added, if there is a pressure decrease in the injectors, engine power will be reduced to reduce risk and allow drivers to halt in a secure area and call for help.
A tube to drain fuel from the cylinder head and away from hot surfaces will also be installed.
