Former Malian President, Amadou Toumani Touré has died at the age 72.
He was Mali’s president from 2002 until he was deposed by a 2012 military coup led by General Amadou Haya Sanogo.
Touré arrived Turkish commercial capital, Istanbul, a few days ago for medical attention and died early Tuesday while receiving treatment.
Before his departure from Mali, he had undergone an emergency heart surgery in the capital, Bamako.
Nicknamed the “soldier of democracy,” Mr Touré’s is known for ending years of military rule and handing power to civilians by organizing elections in 1992.
