Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of FTX, consented to his extradition to the US, where federal prosecutors have charged him with eight charges of fraud and conspiracy.
In the Bahamas, Bankman-Fried is being represented by Jerone Roberts, who on Monday afternoon announced that his client “has accepted to be voluntarily extradited to the United States of America.”
Roberts stated that Bankman-upcoming Fried’s court appearance will be to conclude the extradition process in an interview with a local journalist.
According to a representative for the Fox Hill prison in the Bahamas, where Bankman-Fried is being held, he is scheduled to return to court on Tuesday morning.
At 9:30 a.m. ET, the Nassau Magistrate Court opens, and the first hearings start at 10 a.m. ET. The first hearing of the day is anticipated to be for Bankman-Fried.
The 30-year-old former crypto-celebrity Bankman-Fried was detained a week ago at his luxurious Bahamas home. FTX, the cryptocurrency exchange he launched in 2019, has been accused by federal prosecutors in New York of scamming investors and clients.
Authorities claimed that an arrangement had been made with Bankman-US Fried’s attorneys to permit his extradition to the country so that he could be charged with federal crimes. Roberts, Bankman-lawyer Fried’s in the Bahamas, asserted that he was not a party to that arrangement.
After the hearing, the disgruntled magistrate in charge of the case cleared the courtroom so that Bankman-Fried may contact his US attorneys in the presence of his Bahamian counsel.
After that, Bankman-Fried was taken back to the Bahamian jail where he had been detained for the previous week.
According to the US State Department, Fox Hill’s conditions are difficult. The jail was criticized in the report for its overcrowding, subpar nutrition, inadequate cleanliness, and lack of medical treatment. According to the report, cramped cells were frequently without mattresses and “infested with rodents, maggots, and insects.”
Once in US custody, Bankman-Fried is anticipated to submit a new bail request. If bail was not granted, he would be detained in Brooklyn, New York, in a federal detention facility.
